Have any of you added onto your home or remodeled your home? If you have, you know what a roller coaster that can be for your life. Well, it wasn’t any easier for us. Let me set the scene…
We moved back to my home state to be closer to family. My family lives on a larger property. In the back, there is a guest home. When my two children and I moved into this guest home, it was essentially a studio apartment. However, unlike a studio, this guest home did not have a kitchen, the bathroom did not function properly, there was only one door, the flooring was ruined, and so much more.
We knew that if the kids and I were going to stay long term, this needed a lot of work. So the sleeves were pulled up, we hired a phenomenal contractor, and we got to it. We were determined to make this our home.
The first step was to clear everything that was in the home. Before we got here, the guest home was basically a garage/storage. That being said, there was no reason to upkeep it before. My mom and I spent two days in there cleaning out anything, throwing things away, salvaging anything that could be spared, and getting it totally ready to be worked on. I also had a dirt plot next to it that had to be picked up. This is where we were going to add a room for the kids.
Then the contractor guys came in. They started out by adding on the 16×16 bedroom for the kids. Which is huge! I made the decision to sleep in the main living area. Most people would disagree with this choice, and it isn’t for everyone, but it makes the most sense for our life for now. We will add more on eventually. One thing I loved about our crew was they painted the kids room amazingly. Its a light blue with dark blue letters that spell “Boys Room”. Awesome!
After the addition was done, there was the flooring and roof, windows etc. Everything was really starting to come together.
When they started working on my kitchen, this is when I was really hands on. Every person who loves to cook (me), knows their kitchen is a sanctuary. All of our stuff was picked out and put in to maximize space, kind of like the methods you see in “tiny homes”, the only item that I made sure was put in was this amazing stove with a griddle. I also made sure to have a space to create a pantry, and a barn door to the bathroom (also maximizes space). The flooring was this amazing Planko wood, except for the bathroom which is tile.
Our home is also now separated by a fence with a seaparate entrance. This is really home. We have started to make it more “homey” for us. It’s a long and beautiful process that could drive anyone mad.
I hope you enjoyed reading this, I cant wait to update you with all of our new additions to our little home! 🙂
Simply,
Miss Shay
